OM MANI PADME HUM (OHM-MAH-NEE-PAHD-MAY-HUM)...Is Sanskrit, meaning "Praise to the Jewel in the Lotus." It is the official mantra of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokitshvara or Chenrezig in Tibetan Buddhism. What can be said about this mantra, except that it is most likely the most popular, most used mantra in the world, and rightfully so. Its peace and power cannot be exceeded. And with daily practice, this simple and easy to pronounce mantra can and will work its miraculous powers for you and send your spiritual evolution through the roof.

*It clears the mind, allowing you to detach from the ego.
*The words help release karmas that may be holding you back.
*These words can send out a message about the kind of life you wish to manifest.
*It empties the body of everything but an awareness of the inside.
*It brings Wisdom by opening the channels of higher communications.
*It promotes Peace, Happiness, Harmony and Unity within ourselves and thus in the world.
*Transmutes lower ego desires into Divine willpower and inspirations.

It is said that all of the Buddha's teachings are wrapped up in this one mantra. Thinking of that while reciting will juice up the power. Placing one's mind on the meaning of the mantra while chanting is the source of its power. It is said that when you chant a mantra, you are actually tapping into the collective power of everyone who has ever chanted that mantra down through time. With intention, this can help you to tap into the present, past and future chanting of said mantra. Just being aware of it is enough to plug in. Trusting your self-knowledge is key to such experiences. This power will automatically be placed inside of your magical body, which is the collective power of everything you have ever spiritually or magically done. It can be accessed anytime, just by knowing or willing it towards a specific goal.

Awareness is power. While chanting this or any mantra, one can easily place their attention in any Chakra. Staying aware of the relationship of the mantra meaning to the Chakra's meaning with the clear goal in mind, one can at the same time visualize the correct Chakra color to each assigned clockwise spinning Chakra. This will boost your mantra and will help unlock the power of the Chakras according to your original purpose.

Consider it the universal key code to everything that is good, using it like a phone number or online password. Chanting OM MANI PADME HUM while focusing on the Heart Chakra while feeling love and compassion for all, seeing it as a green circle rotating clockwise, will unlock all of the Divine qualities of the heart, as well as cleanse it from any negative emotions held there, as well as increase all of the heart's positive traits such as the before mentioned Love and compassion for all.

The main power of any mantra is to help us turn inward and to discover ourselves in the Eternal Now or the ever Present graceful state of Divinity. The only state that is real in any moment is this Now, for the past is a memory and the future an anticipation, so to tap into this silent beingness of Now can at first seem way too simple. But with time and practice, the eternal secrets hidden inside your spirit beyond all thoughts will reveal themselves.

It's much like looking only at the waves of the ocean, aware of only the surface of things, never seeing or experiencing the true power of the ocean's depth beneath the waves. It is here not too commonly seen that true power exists. Not seeing something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It's like only focusing on the end result of something, never inquiring of the process that produced the result. There is great power in self inquiry (Who am I?) and inquiry of the world (What is my purpose?) and inquiry of the myriad mysterious deep things in this ocean of life that mantra helps us to penetrate that will assist us in self-evolution beyond the obvious.

One must not be afraid of the darkened silence that lies within. One must not turn away from the unknown out of fear. The Spiritual path is for spiritual warriors. As Paramahansa Yogananda once said, "The spiritual path is only for the brave." It is like we are the modern pioneers, for no longer do we seek to map out the Earth as we once did. Some say that space is the new frontier. I say that as we haven't even fully explored our oceans' depths, much like we haven't even begun to explore our inner self's limitless nature. As we look to space for life's meaning, it is a sign that we as a race are continuing to look for meaning outside ourselves rather than look for meaning on the inside of ourselves. I say before we continue to look outside ourselves, it's time we give the exploration of ourselves much, much more effort and attention.

Happiness will never be found outside, but within, and it is time we respect this eternal law of nature and stop with the hamster wheel of repeating the same crazy behaviors over and over again. If something isn't working, move on. The unrest in the world says unequivocally that what we are doing isn't working, so logic dictates try something else. How about LOVE? We must surpass the corny feelings that are conjured up by the ego when such statements are said. This is simply an ego distraction. That is the cause of the hamster wheel being placed into motion to start with.

Sit in the uncomfortableness and Love anyway. OM MANI PADME HUM, when done with the full awareness of presence, will lead us from the uncomfortable to the blissful peace that is the natural state of each and every one of us. It is quite obvious to me that we no longer have anywhere else to go or anything else to do except go within. I believe this is the key answer to world peace, for only when peace is found individually within, and then collectively, will peace reign supreme in our Earthly realm.

With the help of OM MANI PADME HUM, this can be achieved sooner than later. What are we waiting for? Let us all dedicate from this moment on a little time each day to this simple sacred practice of focusing on peace and allowing it to ripple throughout the world. With or without chanting OM MANI PADME HUM, one can visualize pink light coming from your heart, encircling you and allowing it to encircle another, maybe someone you saw on the street today, or even someone imagined. Traveling then across your city, state and eventually the whole planet, progressively embracing all the land mass country by country until the whole of Earth is embraced by the light. Then to GOD.

This is called the Buddhist's Metta Meditation which is expressing love to yourself, to others, to the world and then to GOD. I recommend doing this in the same order of yourself, others, the world, then God. This could lead one to the gates of enlightenment very quickly being of pure compassion. Coupling the Metta with OM MANI PADME HUM will increase the power we all need in this world to get along and have compassionate tolerance for everyone.

Outer Space may be the next frontier for the majority of humanity, but it is Inner Space that is The Final Frontier of mankind, and Mantra is the space ship that will take us there. It is OM MANI PADME HUM that will help us all master it. For the purpose of world peace, Buddhists all over the world hold retreats that can last weeks, all dedicated to reciting OM MANI PADME HUM one million times. Individuals at home and abroad dedicate their personal time to chanting OM MANI PADME HUM one thousand times. I have personally have done this and it doesn't take as long as one may think. (Using pen and paper, one can keep up the the count, and as long as it's done in one day, it doesn't necessarily have to be done in one sitting.) The benefits far outweigh the time and effort.

When I did it, it literally placed me in direct Divine alignment, which was a feeling of a spiritual high and an overwhelming sense of peace that lasted a week. The awesome benefit of chanting OM MANI PADME HUM one thousand times has the exciting effect that it literally places around the practitioner a bubble of tranquility that extends out around the body about eight feet and has the power to raise the vibration of any and all life (including rocks, trees, animals and elements such as bodies of water) that comes in contact with the bubble. It can also be consciously directed towards anything through touch or even thought.

Vibrational Calm and other worldly peace is its effect. To my surprise, more than a couple of people have told me that they feel peace and calm around me even over the phone or texting online, and I must attribute that, of course, to my one thousand recitations of OM MANI PADME HUM . I have performed it more than several thousand times and continuing. So you see, I teach through experience more than theory, and I choose that for the element of truth in the teaching has been proven.

Although it may not be quite as effective as live chanting, recording and listening will still have profound effects. There is always a way to harness the power of mantra no matter the life circumstance. (No excuses.) If you want to do mantra, you will find a way. Don't wait until a tragedy of ill luck befalls you before you pick up the habit of mantra, which unfortunately was the case with me before I started. Sometimes a soul has no other recourse but to dig deep and begin crying out through mantra in an attempt to overcome some great pain. It is best if we choose through our own volition to learn beneficial things for our overall health and well-being before life has no other choice but to teach us by getting our attention in other dramatic ways. Often times through bad events, it is simply the universe actually saving us from some unforeseen greater pain or even death.

One can also record themselves reciting the mantra one thousand times for future use, or recording the mantra one hundred times, thus listening for ten times for a total of one thousand times. One can easily listen to this with earbuds doing almost anything and can also listen to it while sleeping. The subconscious mind will utilize the power gained through listening to the mantra in this fashion.

Negating negative karma is one of the main uses of this mantra. Reciting one thousands times will erase some of the negative karmas of the past, present and even future incarnations of the reciter. For future incarnations, you say "Yes" by chanting OM MANI PADME HUM now. It can bring you to a pure state where, in the future, you would not even consider any negative thoughts or actions. Peace and Compassion will become your soul's main purpose.

Although I recommend the chanting of this mantra one thousand times, I would like to say that any chanting, even performed once, silently or aloud, has amazing benefits. By tuning into one's own soul, you will be guided on how many times, when and where the recitation should take place. The traditional number of recitations of almost any mantra is one hundred and eight times, which is an easy thing to fit into your daily routine. While chanting, putting oneself in their heart space while visualizing the darkness decreasing with the light increasing can be one of the countless ways to slip into one's natural state of Enlightenment, which should be the main objective of any good mantra practice. While chanting OM MANI PADME HUM, one can see themselves superimposed by a Yin Yang symbol of light and dark while having intentions to balance the Karmic life energies. This will help in the process of integrating both the negative and positive polarities within oneself.

Reciting OM MANI PADME HUM with full concentration and complete awareness of the self, Mind, Body and Spirit or Soul (Personality) in the present moment of the eternal now just as you are can place you in the space between the music. That's the place of power, for music doth not come from the notes themselves but comes from the space between the notes. Creative experimentation is an essential key to progress of any sort and I highly recommend it. Beyond any sense of perfection in the pronunciation of mantras, one should always follow the heart and do your best at the recitation. God knows your intent and that sincerity is all that matters.

The in-between is a creative place of power. It is the transcendental state of the great ancient yogis of India who found out through mantras such as OM MANI PADME HUM that one can not only be in this state temporarily, but with constant practice, can live and exist in this GOD state perpetually. How did these mantras come to the Rishis of ancient India? I say they came to them through the explorations of deep meditation. The voice of Brahma arose out of the depths of those brave souls who, for us all, discovered a way to listen to GOD. Mantra can reveal this path back to ourselves, back to GOD and back to our original state of paradise. The Buddhists call this state Equanimity.

One can even silently chant OM MANI PADME HUM while washing the car or dishes (this is called Short time by Buddhists). Instead of thinking daydreams of fantasy, such as "Who will I date this weekend? or "I must pay such and such a bill," if one must have such thoughts, save them for after the chanting. This will increase self discipline in a way that can't be imagined. Finding time to do your mantras during and after activities will eventually show their benefits and power. Development of discipline and patience in faith is a great example of what they can mysteriously do.

I have learned that animals can be helped greatly with the use of this mantra. For example, while hanging out with my beloved dog Roscoe, a sweet little Boston Terrier, I softly chant OM MANI PADME HUM out loud and he actually lies down upon my lap and sleeps. It has incredible healing and calming effects upon any listener. Another way of helping animals is to recite it in their ears as they lay dying. I have been given the privilege of doing this with many animals without knowing its power. It was only later that I learned by this act, you assist the animal's soul out of suffering and help guide them to rebirth as a human, which is said to even be greater than a soul being reborn as a god or deity. For as a human we have the opportunity to surpass all states and births and gain Nirvana through the process of Liberation and Enlightenment. And last but not least, I chant over my pup's food or even play a recorded mantra near or over the food. With every bite of that food, the animal is taking in liberating vibrations that they could not get any other way, since they themselves in their present form cannot chant like we humans. Trust me, this is one of the greatest acts of compassion that you will ever be able to render to another creature.

Some Monks while walking meditatively throughout their monastery grounds will silently chant OM MANI PADME HUM while placing their attention on the bottom at the soles (soul) of their feet. This practice will ensure you always walk the path of the Dharma (Truth.)

Now we have been introduced to the many different ways of practicing the chanting of such Divine mantras as OM MANI PADME HUM. May we all get chanting, for life is a ritual and Time is a practice. For the greater good of all 'OM MANI PADME HUM'.

Hi, Allen. I have never been introduced to Buddhist chanting before your article. I think as a novice, it would help me to have a CD available. Do you have any recommendations for someone new to this practice? Thank you for your thoroughness of the description of the chant.
